Learning Expo- 26th August 2015

Hi All,

If you didn't get time to come and see some of the awesome work Room 8 is doing in class. Here are a few pics that were taken of our display. Our displays were based on our topic this term- "Writer's at work". Students had an author that they had to research and make comparisons between two different texts written by that author.

Room 8 and 9 with the police

On Friday my class, room 8 and I went over to room 9 to talk to the police about stealing. The first thing we did was making a list about the bad things that people could do to get arrested, fined or even getting sent to court and prison. After we did that the police officers explained to us what the word ‘law’ meant. Next, we did an activity and had to match the paragraphs to the correct sign. The paragraph wasn’t hard it was easy for some students but the other students thought it was hard. When it was all done we asked some final questions, my question was “if a child killed somebody do they go to a kid jail or get a HUGE punishment?” Everyone was laughing but I was quite serious. When it was over the officers went to their next destination room 21. After that we went back to our classes and carried on with our learning.

NETBALL TOURNAMENT

On Tuesday, 23rd of June 2015, Room 8 went to a Netball Cluster at Papakura Netball Courts.

First we lined up and waited until the time ticked 8.55am. Then we got in the bus and drove all the way to Papakura. On the way we got confused and had to search our location.

When we got to the Netball Courts at 9.45am our teacher, Miss Tuapawa had to go and check if we were in the right place and we waited for her.

After that we went to the courts excitedly and did some warm-up shuttle runs. Then we got into two teams, one team was called the Golden Comets and the other team was called the Stars.

Golden Comets game was first and they versed Clayton Park School. It was a draw 3-3.

Stars game was next and they versed Red Hill School and they lost against them.

After that we ate lunch and practised our shooting, then Golden Comets played again. They versed Red Hill School and they won.

At prizegiving, the year 5/6 Stars came first and for the year 7/8 category Clayton Park School came first.

At the end we stopped at McDonalds and had an soft-serve cone. It was yum.

I enjoyed the Netball Cluster tournament as we got to play other teams.

Bubble Gum Dance Group

On Tuesday 2nd June 2015 Teesha and her Bubble Gum dance crew came to our school and performed a dance. They were so amazing, I was impressed with their dance moves. After that they got 5 teachers and 5 kids, to dance to the nae nae song. Then they were dancing to it, at the end they said their names my favourite was Teesha, Quan and Brianna. This is one of the statements from Brianna “I am skinny, I am tall, I am a blondie and I am rich”.

Week 6

Samoa Independence Day

On Friday 29th May 2015 the whole school performed there dances in the hall. Room 8 & 7 performed together, we did a dance and a song that we had to sing. I reckon that we did a cool song because some people were singing it in the hall with us. Then when we got up we felt like we were going to have a heart attack because we were so nervous. My lips were shaking when I was singing. Finally we had finished, we were so happy when we got outside. Then we watched a few more performances. Then it was Room 9’s turn to do their performances. I think they were doing the sasa. I thought that they were the best today.

Week 5, Term 2

The-Magical-Volcano_art.jpg?maxHeight=600maxWidth=600v=1327778100 350×350 pixels

Today Miss Tuapawa, Whaea Maxine and my class were painting. It was incredible. We did a volcano and some koru patterns that represented the lava and smoke that comes out when the volcano erupts. First of all, we dyed our paper with dark blue, light blue and purple dye. Then we painted the volcano with acrylic paints. We all had fun today.

ANZAC week celebrations

ANZAC DAY

On Friday, my class and I made some cupcakes for the memorial of the 100th year since the ANZACs went to war. The groups made different cupcakes, my group made chocolate chip cupcakes. We made $147 and we donated it to the ANZAC appeal. After that we had a special ceremony. They played an old song, it made me think about all the people that went to war. Someone from Room 20 went up and did a speech. Then we sang a song. I learnt that the people that went to war fought for our country. I am thankful to the soldiers that sacrificed their life for us.

Top class for Term 1 Kiwi Can

On Tuesday Room 8 won the top class for Kiwi Can. We won Kiwi Can by listening, completing activities, reciting the Kiwi Can topic for the week and working together as a team. We got to spend yesterday with Kiwi Can. We watched Big Hero 6 in the morning, then we went swimming and then came back to class and Kiwi Can had brought us pizzas and hot chips. My favourite part of the day, was watching a movie. I hope we can win again next term.

Hokotehi Owenga Softball

On Friday we had our softball game. We versed Leebank Scorpions, we lost our game because some people couldn't control their anger. Then we had a turn batting and they got us out. We were sad because some of us never got to catch but we tried and tried but we still lost our game. It was OK though, because my teacher Miss Tuapawa and Miss Magaoa came to watch us. We were surprised and nervous to see them at our game. We had our prize-giving because that was our last game for the season. The team that won all their games was Hokotehi Scorpions, they won medals. We got to have a free ice-cream, sausage sizzle, water and lollies.

Life jacket lesson with Community Swim

A challenging session for Room 8 at the Manurewa pools, learning how to do a back drop in the pool, floating together and a pin drop into the 2m pool (a first for most of my students).

Some students were hesitant at first, but took the risk and gave it a go. I was proud of each student, as I knew it challenged them to step outside their comfort zone.

Bacteria: Friend or Foe?

Looking at the bacteria that has grown over the week through the microscopes

Not all Bacteria are bad, some help us to survive each day. Some bacteria can be found in food we eat like yoghurt and cheese. There is even bacteria in some medicines, that help us get better.
